Grass Valley is a city located in Nevada County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,922.

On May 15, 1902 in a field outside Grass Valley, Lyman Gilmore reportedly became the first person to fly a powered airplane (a steam-powered glider).

The racial makeup of the city is 91.91% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 1.34% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 3.71% from two or more races. 6.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,016 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.6% are non-families. 39.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size in Grass Valley is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.80.
